5,000 Malware Attacks in August 2025: Your Antivirus Is Not a Behavioural Safeguard!

In August 2025, Australian organisations faced over 5,000 malware attacks and more than 65,000 network intrusion attempts, according to WatchGuard Technologies. That equates to seven malware threats per hour and 90 network attacks every hour. These numbers are a stark reminder that cyber criminals are relentless, even when attack volumes appear to dip.

While the report notes a 68% drop in malware activity from July to August, the reality is more complex. The vast majority of threats, 93 percent, were known malware strains including phishing and credential theft attempts like HTML Beluga 5564 and JS Trojan Cryxos 14878.

These are not sophisticated zero-day exploits. They are recycled scams that continue to succeed because many organisations remain vulnerable to the basics.

Behavioural Blind Spots Are the Real Weak Link

At Cybermate, we believe the core threat is not just technical but behavioural. Attackers are not only breaching firewalls. They are breaching trust. They exploit routine habits, rushed decisions, and the assumption that someone else is handling security.

Our AI-powered awareness training goes beyond compliance. It helps users understand why they are targeted, how scams manipulate emotion, and what behavioural cues signal danger. We do not just train. We reshape habits.

Known Threats and Known Fixes So Why the Gap

WatchGuard’s Anthony Daniel put it plainly. Businesses cannot afford to be complacent. Maintaining layered defences and strong detection capabilities remains critical. We agree and we would add that layered defences must include human behaviour. Firewalls do not stop someone from clicking a fake invoice. Antivirus does not prevent a staff member from entering credentials into a spoofed login page.

Cybermate’s platform is built for this reality. We help schools, charities, SMEs, and larger organisations close the behavioural gap without overwhelming their teams or budgets.
